The Multi-Service Platform (MSP) is the core of our Next Generation Network. MSP is a genuinely next generation network that's here today and already helping our customers. It reaches more customers, with nodes going live in India and the Middle East later this year.

In the UK, we operate the network across 87 nodes at 74 different locations, based on multiple 10Gbit/s rings, giving great national coverage and scale for MSP delivered services. The network also connects to our 802 unbundled exchanges and our fibre access network comprising over 250 nodes - to further extend our footprint for SDSL and Ethernet connectivity.

The MSP was created to deliver:

•    high capacity and scalability, to support the expected rapid growth in demand driven by next generation access technologies

•    the step-change in service availability and discrimination necessary to support the convergence of critical traffic, such as emergency services 999 calls, to IP

•    full service convergence, enabling integrated networked-applications solutions based on Ethernet and IP WAN services

IT’S MULTI-SERVICE: MULTIPLE SERVICES OVER THE SAME ACCESS BEARER

We are able to offer different services over the same Ethernet access bearer. Today, we can provide Ethernet Wireline and Ethernet VPN over the same bearer. In late 2008 we will also add IPVPN.

IT’S MORE ROBUST

Our MSP is able to re-converge IP packets in 50 milliseconds in the event of a loss of network path or node. A traditional MPLS network can take up to 30 seconds to deliver the same performance. And we understand what we're talking about, when we talk about network criticality. Fast ReRoutes are important for the performance for our customers' applications, critical for network providers to credibly offer real-time applications such as VoIP or high definition IP video conferencing. For us, they're one of many, many components that support the only UK NGN carrying 999 calls.

IT’S BUILT FOR SCALE

Business agility is provided through options such as our ability to offer full Gigabit Ethernet throughput (and 10 Gigabit Ethernet is planned for autumn 2008). Most legacy networks, while able to offer Gig-E connectivity, only offer 300-500Mbit/s throughput, or require "network build" to deliver it. Our Gig-E offers bandwidth flexibility and can be provisioned without network audits and site visits. It's a pay as you need approach, letting you take what you want when you want it.

A COMMON INFRASTRUCTURE

We know that convergence of services will reduce costs and increase simplicity in your business, allowing easier management and increased flexibility. Ours is the only convergence ready network with multi-service, multi-access across a single bearer. A clear benefit of multi-service networks is the ability to support services across common IT and processes. Our IP VPN and Layer 2 Ethernet products use the same management services to support you and this means that our products are easier to provide and maintain, and you benefit from the same great service experience.
